Why work feels better together
May 15, 2026Welcome to Psychology Week 2026!
We know that feeling we belong at work is key to our on health and happiness and to being engaged and performing better. A key role of leadership is to create belonging and civility. This benefits the people in their team, the organisation and themselves! One study found the average leader spends seven weeks per year on the fallout of disrespect at work!
This is a great article outlines how can we help people at work bridge differences and disagree productively. Key themes are:
- A healthy work culture is as important as performance – we need to work on it.
- Civility isn’t about avoiding differences—it’s about managing them well.
- Replace debate mode with learning mode.
- People connect through stories, not positions.
- Focus on why people believe something, not just what they believe.
- Emphasise what unites people, not just what divides them.
- Civility grows in safe, respectful environments.
- Civility is a skill that can be learned and practised.
- Connection reduces conflict.
- Everyone shapes the culture—not just leaders
